LINX COMMUNICATIONS AND FOCAL COMMUNICATIONS
FORM STRATEGIC ALLIANCE
Linx to Co-locate Equipment with Focal for Nationwide Deployment
of Linx Universal Number Service
Newton, MA - March 29, 1999 - Linx Communications, a leading Communications Service Provider, today announced that it has formed a strategic alliance with Focal Communications Corporation (Focal). Under the terms of the agreement, Linx will co-locate its switching equipment in Focal facilities across the United States as it deploys its revolutionary Universal Number( service in major metropolitan areas. In addition, Focal will provide other services to Linx, including local dial tone.
Joe Gately, president and CEO of Linx, stated, "We are excited about the opportunity to work with Focal as we expand our service across the U.S. Focal's emphasis on local services in key markets mirrors ours as we work to build the only national local access unified messaging network in the country. We believe that Focal's capabilities and expertise complement ours, making this a powerful partnership."
Bob Taylor, president and CEO of Focal, added, "We are very pleased to play a strategic role in the deployment of a leading edge service such as Linx Universal Number. We look forward to helping Linx expand its service offerings into new markets in 1999 and beyond."
Linx Universal Number is a revolutionary service that cost effectively simplifies and streamlines voice, fax and other communications services for on-the-go business professionals, saving time and money and eliminating the frustrations associated with "telephone tag". When a caller dials a user's Universal Number, the system rings up to three specified numbers simultaneously and announces the caller. The user can choose to take the call, send it to voice mail, or even transfer the call to a colleague. With only one number as the point of access, Universal Number makes it easy for important clients and contacts to stay in touch while allowing the user to take only necessary calls.
Linx service is ideal for corporations, telecommuters and mobile professionals in a variety of key industries including financial services, banking, technology, healthcare, manufacturing and many others that require a more simplified and manageable approach to communications services. Linx corporate customers include 3Com, America Online, Apple Computer, Compaq, Coopers & Lybrand, EMC, and Ernst & Young. By installing state-of-the-art switches in major cities throughout the country, Linx is providing access to calls and messages via the phone or Internet through local numbers. While Linx services can be used by customers anywhere through toll free numbers, a unique feature of the service is its local number access which makes it significantly more cost effective than other unified services that require 800 number calls.
Linx Universal Number service is currently available in Boston, New York, San Francisco and Washington, DC. Linx will expand service to 15 additional cities in 1999, including Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and Dallas. In addition to Universal Number, Linx provides a range of other communications services. Linx services are subscription-based and start at $14.95 per month.
