LINX COMMUNICATIONS SPONSORS WALTHAM HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT AT "CAMP TELECOM"

Massachusetts Telecommunications Council's Camp Telecom Offers Summer Program For Students Interested In Computers

Newton, MA - August 19, 1999 - Linx Communications, Inc., a leading Communications Service Provider (CSP), was one of 30 sponsors at the first ever , a program created by the Massachusetts Telecommunications Council and held in conjunction with UMASS Boston July 12-July 30, 1999. The three-week program for high school students, explored the areas of Java programming, computer animation, and PC assembly.
Camp Telecom provided a unique opportunity for high school juniors and seniors with an ardent interest in telecommunications, computer science, and technology to explore these areas with experts from the industry. Linx joined Lucent, Comverse Network Systems, Brooktrout Technology, Time-Warner Cable, Omnipoint, Nortel, 3Com, Cisco, and others, in sponsoring 24 local high school students, and six teachers, enabling them to attend the camp.

"Linx is proud to sponsor the inaugural year of Camp Telecom," said Joe Gately, President and CEO, Linx Communications. "We believe it's critical to invest early in the development of our future workforce, and to foster students' interest in telecommunications. The more we can contribute to their education now, the better off we all will be tomorrow. Telecommunications and computer science are hot industries right now and will have a significant impact on how people live and work in the future. The students who participated in Camp Telecom are the leaders of the 21st century; we wanted to help nurture their talents."

"I had an amazing three weeks," said John Vautour, a senior at Waltham High School, and the student sponsored by Linx. "I am so thankful to Linx for giving me the opportunity to study and learn about computer animation and computer programming. I have always had an interest in programming, and the multimedia director computer animation class has really sparked my interest to take more computer classes at Waltham High and in college."

As part of this program, students spent time in the computer labs at UMASS Boston, and participated in classroom work, career exploration, and field trips to local telecommunications companies. "Without the support of companies such as Linx, Camp Telecom would not have been possible," said the Massachusetts Telecommunications Council's Executive Director, Katherine Raphaelson. "Linx is exactly the kind of company that excites and inspires these students - a fast-paced, young organization with leading edge technology and a dynamic a™osphere. Camp Telecom will change the future direction of many of our students and the sponsors should be proud of their contributions."
