LINX COMMUNICATIONS LAUNCHES WEB-BASED UNIFIED COMMUNICATIONS PORTAL

LinxWeb Delivers Internet-Based Integrated Platform For Accessing and Managing All Communications, Anytime, Anywhere

Newton, MA - August 16, 1999 - Linx Communications, Inc., a leading Communications Service Provider (CSP), announced today the availability of its web-based unified communications platform called LinxWeb. LinxWeb, the latest addition to Linx' unified communications services, is a personal web portal that offers a unified platform for streamlining and managing a person's daily communications including phone calls (from any landline or mobile phone), messages, pages and faxes. LinxWeb offers an intuitive, web-based interface for viewing messages, managing communications, and initiating real-time call connection/routing, which saves busy mobile professionals time and money while greatly improving their workday productivity.

"There is no shortage of business communications tools to help busy professionals. Most professionals today have an average of six communications devices that they use each day - office phones, mobile phones, multiple voice mailboxes, pagers, fax machines, and e-mail. Managing these devices and tools has become unwieldy," said Joe Gately, president and CEO of Linx. "Mobile professionals spend an inordinate amount of time checking multiple voice mailboxes, returning calls, and playing phone tag. With LinxWeb, we're making communications manageable. We're providing users with a single site for accessing and administering their voice messages, pages, and faxes, as well as initiating telephone calls, through an easy-to-use visual interface. We enable businesspeople to be more reachable, responsive, and productive."

LinxWeb is offered free of charge to LinxConnect customers, extending the reach of the unified communications service to take advantage of the flexibility and ubiquity of the web. Users have their own LinxWeb Personal Communications Home Page that is an active message hub for all phone, cellular, and fax correspondence. Essentially, it provides a bridge between the Internet and the public switched telephone network. Users access their LinxWeb account from any standard web browser to visually manage and control all in-bound and out-bound communications more efficiently, including:

  • Voice: Retrieve and forward all phone messages from multiple devices, place phone calls
  • Fax: Retrieve, print and forward faxes
  • E-Mail: Send voice and fax correspondence as e-mail messages
  • Account Management: Change LinxConnect settings and preferences, including user availability, phone numbers, etc.

LinxWeb with LinxConnect
LinxWeb joins Linx' growing suite of unified communications service offerings, including its flagship LinxConnect service. LinxConnect integrates landline voice, wireless voice, fax, and other communications services through a single local access or toll-free number. The availability of local number access makes LinxConnect significantly more flexible and cost effective than one-number services only offering 800 numbers.

With a single number as the point of access for all communications, LinxConnect makes it easy for important clients and contacts to stay in touch while allowing the user to better prioritize calls and messages. When a caller dials a user's LinxConnect number, the system rings up to three specified numbers simultaneously and announces the caller. The user can choose to take the call, send it to voice mail, or even transfer the call to a colleague. For faxes, Linx notifies users that a fax is waiting and they can chose to store the fax for future access or direct it to any fax machine for printing.

Unified communications is an emerging market that combines unified messaging with call-connect services. While unified messaging provides asynchronous "store-and-forward" access to voice, fax, and email from a single mailbox, unified communications takes this one step further by combining unified messaging with the power and flexibility of real-time call connection and routing. Users can access any message and connect with incoming calls on-the-fly, from any location, using any communications device in real time.

National Linx Network
Linx is installing state-of-the-art switches in major cities throughout the country, allowing the company to provide access to calls and messages via the phone or Internet through local numbers. Through its partnership with Focal Communications of Chicago, Ill., Linx is co-locating its switching equipment in Focal facilities across the United States as it deploys LinxConnect nationwide.

Linx 800-number services are available nationwide and local access numbers are available in the Metropolitan Service Areas of San Francisco, Boston, New York, Washington, DC and Los Angeles. Linx plans to expand its local access service to additional cities within the next year.

Because Linx services can be tightly integrated into existing corporate voice mail and telecom systems, they are ideal for corporations, telecommuters, and mobile professionals in a variety of industries including financial services, banking, technology, healthcare, real estate, consulting, manufacturing, and many others that require a more simplified and manageable approach to their daily communications.

Pricing and Availability
Available in September, LinxWeb is free of charge to LinxConnect customers.
